A living wall installation using a dense mix of low-maintenance foliage, irrigated automatically to keep the display consistent year-round.
The Challenge
A long, blank exterior wall faced the main courtyard with no planting bed or ground space in front of it to work with — just bare masonry catching full sun for a good part of the day. The client wanted the wall to become a green feature rather than staying a flat, unused surface, but there was nowhere at ground level to plant anything against it.
The Solution
With no ground space available, the planting had to go vertical. We installed a modular panel system directly onto the wall, backed by a proper waterproofing layer to protect the masonry behind it before any planting or irrigation went in. Species were chosen specifically for their tolerance of vertical growth and the wall’s sun exposure, arranged in a high-density layout so the combined foliage would read as one continuous green surface rather than a grid of individual plants.
An automated drip irrigation system was built into the panel structure itself, since a vertical wall has no soil reservoir to fall back on and dries out far faster than a planting bed would at ground level. Access points were planned in from the start so individual panels could be reached later for pruning or plant replacement without disturbing the rest of the wall.
The Result
The wall is now the courtyard’s clear focal point — a dense, established green surface where there used to be bare masonry. The automated irrigation keeps the planting evenly watered across the full height of the wall, and the built-in access points have made ongoing upkeep straightforward rather than requiring scaffolding every time something needs attention.
